In its infinite wisdom, the U.S. military thought experiments were necessary on the effects of invading armies into areas just nuked. So in the 1950s atomic bombs were detonated in the desert and guinea pig soldiers were sent in to as close as they could get to the area where the mushroom cloud stood. This is some insane video archive footage. Many of these soldiers would of course get extremely sick - thereby rendering a nuke attack followed by invasion less than ideal. In 1989 TNT produced a made-for-TV movie about these experiments called Nightbreaker. But as far as this clip … behold the insanity between 3:40 and 3:45..
