A Christmas Miracle - The Greatest Christmas Speech Ever

So living here in New York as I do, there are people who live not too far from me who are still suffering from the devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought 1.5 months ago now. And then just north across the Sound the most unimaginable massacre took place, scarring the very idea of Christmas for me forever. But then I decided to dust off an old favorite and watched the greatest Christmas comedy ever conceived in the mind of man.

This epic speech at the end of Scrooged, a speech I’ve heard countless times, saved Christmas for me this year. It’s a speech more relevant now than ever. I am so thankful that I’m still here on this rotating spaceship we call planet Earth, thankful that back in 1988 this film was produced, and thankful that Bill Murray exists. Corny and cooky as it may sound, watching this film again for the umpteenth time, and Bill Murray’s performance, and this scene in particular reminded me that it’s of the utmost importance we enjoy our family our friends and most especially the time we have here, even as we grieve and do what we can for those who have lost everything, to the utmost all the time every time all the time.

I don’t live a charmed life by any stretch, but I am very lucky nonetheless. Thank you Bill Murray and Scrooged for reminding me of that. The only thing missing now is the Annie Lennox & Al Green track Put a Little Love in Your Heart.
